The story behind this design

A special thank you to the collaborative efforts of Vantage Point & the designers involved into making this idea to life. 

Damascus gate (باب العامود), from the eyes of a Jerusalemite is known as an icon for Palestinians. The old city of Jerusalem has many gates within its walls. Damascus gate is the main gate, the arabic word used by Palestinians to refer to the gate is باب العمود (Bāb al-ʿĀmūd)- this translates to ‘The Column Gate’. This is due to the fact that there was previously a column situated in front of the gate approx 2000 years ago, however eventhough the column has now gone the name still remains. Damascus gate is the gate that notable historical figures such as Omar ibn Al Khattab and the great Salahuddin Ayyubi used to enter Jerusalem. In current times, it is a notable landmark for Palestinians. It is a place where they often gather, during the holy month it is bustling with life and celebrations of the auspicious time. Living under a brutal occupation, it is also a place the Palestinians gather to protest- many having been killed here.

As the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza continues to unfold, so do the humanitarian needs of victims on the ground. Access to water, food, electricity and medical equipment have been cut off and causalities have accumulated into the thousands. Thousands are without homes, as residential buildings are turned to rubble.
